KeNHA announces traffic disruption along Nairobi-Nakuru, Maai Mahiu highways

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that traffic will be disrupted on two busy highways starting Thursday, July 10, until Sunday, July 20, 2025.

These roads are the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway and the Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha Highway.

Why the Disruption Will Happen

KeNHA explained that the disruption will allow a team to carry out important road surveys and data collection exercises. The team will interview drivers, gather travel details, and conduct various traffic studies.

Drivers using the affected roads may have to stop briefly to answer a few questions about their journey. In addition, officials will collect the following types of data:

  • Axle Load Surveys
  • Origin-Destination Surveys
  • Camera-Based Cross-Sectional Counts
  • Turning Movement Counts

Appeal to Motorists

KeNHA is asking all road users, especially drivers, to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be on-site to guide and assist them. The authority has promised that the exercise will be done as smoothly and quickly as possible.

The Bigger Picture: Road Expansion Plans

This survey is part of a bigger plan. Recently, KeNHA and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Committee approved a project to expand and dual the 175-kilometer stretch between Nairobi and Mau Summit. This upgrade is expected to cost around KSh170 million.

To support this project, President William Ruto secured part of the required funds during his visit to Beijing, China, in April 2025.

This move shows the government’s commitment to improving Kenya’s infrastructure and easing traffic flow on major highways.
