University student in court over fake post about President on X

University student in court over fake post about President on X. The student appeared in court on Monday, accused of posting false information online.

David Oaga Mokaya was charged at the Milimani Law Courts for sharing a photo of a funeral procession with misleading captions on his X (formerly Twitter) account, “Landlord @bozgabi,” on November 13, 2024.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mokaya falsely claimed the image showed President William Ruto being transported in a casket.

The photo, which featured a Kenyan flag-draped casket escorted by military officers in ceremonial uniforms, was reportedly altered to give the impression it involved the President.

The prosecution stated that Mokaya changed details, including the date, to make the post seem authentic, violating laws designed to curb disinformation and maintain public order.

Mokaya pleaded not guilty to the charges and appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhumbi. The court granted him a bond of KSh 100,000 or a cash bail of KSh 50,000.

The case will be heard on December 4, 2024, when further proceedings will take place.

Authorities have warned against spreading false information, emphasizing its potential to cause harm and disrupt public peace.
