Three children, aged between 10 and 4 years, were burned beyond recognition after their house caught fire under unclear circumstances.
The terrible tragedy struck on Friday evening 6/12/2024, in Moburo village, Kapsogut location, Kericho County
Among the victims was a 10-year-old child with a disability. Earlier, one of their siblings had locked them inside the house before leaving to play with friends at a neighbor’s home.
Consequently, the children were unable to escape when the fire broke out.
Meanwhile, the villagers reported that the blaze consumed the family’s main house, which was built from timber and iron sheets. Notably, the fire reduced the structure to ashes, leaving nothing salvageable.
Adding to the speculation, the community members alleged that the children’s parents were not at home during the incident.
They had reportedly left a phone charging inside the house, which they suspect might have exploded and triggered the fire.
Shortly after, neighbors noticed thick smoke billowing from the homestead. Although they rushed to help, they found the house already engulfed in flames.
Despite their efforts to extinguish the fire, they faced challenges due to the dry timber used in the house’s construction and the windy conditions that intensified the inferno.
Subsequently, the incident was reported at Cheborgei Police Station. Police officers promptly responded by visiting the scene, retrieving the charred bodies, and transferring them to Kapkatet Hospital mortuary.
As investigations into the exact cause of the fire continue, the community remains in shock over the devastating loss.
Precautionary measures for fire emergencies
To prevent such devastating incidents and ensure safety during fire emergencies, residents are urged to take precautionary measures.
Always have a fire extinguisher and a bucket of sand or water readily available in your home. Teach children about fire safety and establish an evacuation plan for the household.
In the event of a fire, prioritize safety by immediately calling for help. Dial 999 or the Kenya Fire Brigade hotline 112 to report the incident.
Avoid attempting to extinguish large fires by yourself without professional assistance, as this can put your life at risk.
Additionally, keep emergency numbers for local authorities and medical services saved on your phone and ensure all family members know how to access them.
By staying informed and prepared, communities can better respond to fire accidents and potentially save lives.
