President William Ruto has officially bid a warm farewell to U.S. Ambassador Meg Whitman, who is leaving her role after submitting her resignation to President Joe Biden.
In a statement on X after a farewell ceremony at State House, Nairobi, Ruto commended Whitman for her dedication to strengthening Kenya-U.S. relations over the past two years.
“Farewell to outgoing U.S. Ambassador Meg Whitman at State House, Nairobi. She has greatly contributed to the Kenya-U.S. partnership, and we are truly grateful,” read part of his statement.
Ruto highlighted the longstanding ties between Kenya and the U.S., which have flourished for over six decades.
“Kenya and the United States share a strong partnership built on democracy, the rule of law, and freedom. Over the past two years, our ties have reached new heights, including being recognized as a Major non-NATO ally,” he said.
She resigned
On Sunday, Whitman explained her decision to step down, citing family priorities and preparations for a transition in U.S. leadership after Donald Trump’s election victory.
“When a new administration takes office, ambassadors usually offer their resignations. I wanted to step down now to settle my family back home, especially with three young grandchildren,” she told Sunday Nation.
Whitman dismissed claims that her departure was linked to criticism, emphasizing that it was a routine and respectful transition.
Whitman had served as U.S. Ambassador to Kenya since August 2022.
