Met dept.: Heavy rainfall to continue as long rains season begins

The Kenya Meteorological Department announced on Monday that the rainfall experienced in many parts of the country last week will continue until at least Tuesday this week.

According to an official advisory from the agency, some areas will see isolated heavy rainfall, especially in central Kenya.

The regions of Embu, Tharaka, and Kirinyaga, along with parts of Uasin Gishu, are likely to experience intense downpours.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi, the country’s capital, heavy rainfall is expected in specific areas such as Dagoretti North and Westlands.

Residents in these locations should prepare for wet conditions over the coming days.

Affected areas

The meteorological department had earlier issued a warning on Sunday about widespread rainfall across various regions.

The affected areas include Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands—where Nairobi is located—the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, as well as North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya.

In addition to widespread rain, forecasters have warned that some areas could experience isolated storms and heavy rainfall.

This means that while some regions may see light showers, others could face sudden and intense downpours.

Kenya is now entering its “long rains” season, which is the country’s main rainy period. This season usually starts in March and continues until May.

As a result, many parts of the country should expect frequent rainfall during this time. Authorities advise residents to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
