Kenya Kwanza declared majority in parliament despite court ruling

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has declared Kenya Kwanza as the Majority side, even though a recent court ruling stripped the ruling party of this status.

On Wednesday, while delivering his ruling in the National Assembly, Speaker Wetangula clarified that the court did not specify which coalition holds the Majority or Minority position.

He emphasized that the existing arrangement remains unchanged.

Numbers Favor Kenya Kwanza

According to Wetangula, Kenya Kwanza has 165 members, while Azimio has 154. Because of this, he ruled that Kenya Kwanza remains the Majority in the House.

Speaker Orders an Appeal Against Court Ruling

In addition, Wetangula directed that an appeal be filed against the High Court’s decision. He maintained that the House leadership structure would not change.

“Arising from the foregoing, Kenya Kwanza remains the Majority, and Azimio is the Minority. The leadership of the House remains the same,” he stated.

Azimio MPs Strongly Oppose the Ruling

Azimio lawmakers, led by Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo, rejected Wetangula’s decision. They announced that they would take further steps to challenge it.

“As Azimio, we respectfully disagree with your communication. We will take further action,” Odhiambo stated.

Moments later, frustrated Azimio MPs walked out of the House in protest.

Ongoing Dispute Over Majority Status

Wetangula’s ruling comes amid a heated debate over which coalition rightfully holds the Majority position. The controversy follows a High Court ruling that invalidated Kenya Kwanza’s Majority status.

Justices John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah ruled that Wetangula’s decision contradicted documents from the Registrar of Political Parties.

These records showed that Azimio coalition had the Majority in 2022 before 14 MPs defected to Kenya Kwanza.

Azimio MPs Occupy Majority Side in Protest

After the court ruling, Azimio lawmakers occupied the Majority side when Parliament resumed on Tuesday. They urged Speaker Wetangula to respect the court’s decision.

“The court ruled that Azimio is the Majority coalition. As Parliament, we must obey court decisions even when we disagree with them,” one MP stated.

As the legal battle continues, the leadership dispute in Parliament remains unresolved.
