Gachagua claims his life’s in danger, accuses police of ignoring threats

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again raised concerns over what he believes is a plan to take his life and harm his family.

In a detailed letter sent to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Tuesday, Gachagua said he has faced many threats since he was removed from office in October 2024.

According to Gachagua, his security was deliberately withdrawn, leaving him and his loved ones vulnerable.

He accused the Inspector General of being part of what he called a “well-planned and backward conspiracy” aimed at exposing him to attacks from organized criminal groups, allegedly working hand in hand with the police.

He wrote,

“Your decision to withdraw my security is not a coincidence. It’s part of a bigger plan to make me defenseless against a criminal gang operating with police cooperation.

In the same statement, Gachagua claimed that his homes in Nairobi, Nyeri, and other places have been targeted.

He said the people behind the alleged attacks are known to the police chief and may even be working with him.

Government is to blame.

Moreover, Gachagua revealed that operatives from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) have been trailing him and his family members.

He claimed they drive around in unmarked vehicles or use cars with fake number plates. He said this behavior violates his right to privacy and is deeply troubling.

To support his claims, the former deputy president shared a timeline of events where he says he was either attacked or harassed:

  • November 2024, during a funeral in Limuru, he said goons attacked his convoy, injured mourners, and tried to kill him.
  • In December 2024, he claimed IG Kanja was present in Nyandarua County when gangs used teargas to break up a crowd of his supporters, including people attending a mourning event.
  • January 2025, during a prayer rally led by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, in Nyeri, Gachagua said another group—“well known to the police”—disrupted the event, forcing his wife to be rushed away for safety.
  • He also reported similar chaos at events held on March 23, March 29, and April 6, blaming the same criminal groups and accusing the police of doing nothing to stop them.

Despite repeatedly reporting these incidents, Gachagua said no one has been held accountable. He criticized the police for ignoring his complaints and turning a blind eye to the growing danger.

Take action

Because of this, he has now demanded urgent action. He called on IG Kanja to arrest and prosecute the people behind the alleged attacks. He also wants the police to provide security at all the public gatherings he attends.

In addition, Gachagua requested private security for himself and asked the Inspector General to stop NIS officers from following him and his family members.

He ended his statement by warning the police chief not to interfere with peaceful events or gatherings he plans to attend, saying that all citizens—regardless of political position—deserve protection under the law.
