Floods: 10 Dead, 3,000+ displaced as leaders call for urgent solution

Heavy rains and flooding have claimed ten lives across various parts of the country. Over 3,000 households have been displaced, leaving many families in urgent need of assistance.

On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed the numbers. He identified Kisumu County as the most affected by the flooding.

“The rains are expected to subside soon,” Dr. Omollo said.

“However, we must stay vigilant. Follow government safety directives and avoid hazardous areas such as unsafe dams, roads, and bridges. Adhere to evacuation notices to stay safe.”

To address the recurring floods in Kisumu, Dr. Omollo revealed the government is considering a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to construct the Soin Koru dam.

Don’t oppose everything

He also encouraged citizens to support such initiatives during public participation, instead of just opposing them.

Other leaders echoed these concerns. Kisumu County Women Representative called for swift, long-term solutions.
