Eight families in Kimunye Village, Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, are struggling to cope after a massive fire burned down their homes.
The residents are counting their losses as they try to figure out how to rebuild their lives and their houses destroyed by fire.
Fire Spreads Before Help Arrives
According to the residents, led by Ephantus Bundi, they did everything they could to try and put out the fire.

However, their efforts were not enough, and the flames quickly spread. Before firefighters from the Kirinyaga County Government could reach the scene, the fire had already destroyed eight houses.
Firefighters Arrive Just in Time to Stop More Damage
John Kiama, a firefighter from Kirinyaga County, confirmed that they received an emergency call and rushed to the scene as fast as possible.
“Kimunye is a colonial village with sixteen houses. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, eight houses were already gone. We managed to stop the fire from spreading further,” Kiama explained.
Gas Leak Blamed for the Fire
Police officers from the Kimunye Police Post and the area chief responded to the incident. After investigations, they discovered that the fire started because of a leaking gas cylinder.
“Our neighbor left the house to go to the shop, but a gas cylinder inside was leaking. This caused the fire,” said Peter Ndiga, a resident. “Luckily, no one was hurt.”
Families in Desperate Need of Help
Now, the affected families have nowhere to go. They lost everything—homes, bedding, and food supplies. They are pleading with well-wishers to help them get back on their feet.
“We need support to rebuild our lives,” one resident said. “Any help, no matter how small, would mean a lot to us.”
As the community comes together to support the victims, local leaders and organizations are being urged to step in and provide assistance.
