Controversial televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya died on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, following a terrible road accident that took place at Namba Kapiyo, along the busy Kisumu–Bondo highway.
What Happened on the Road?
According to early reports from investigators, Bishop Deya was driving a Toyota Noah when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle.
His car swerved into the path of an oncoming Moi University bus, leading to a violent head on collision.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the bishop was trying to avoid hitting a vehicle belonging to the Siaya County government.
In the process of trying to dodge the county vehicle, his car veered off and crashed head-on into the university bus.
Immediate Consequences of the Crash
Sadly, Bishop Gilbert Deya died on the spot before help could arrive. Inside his car were two other passengers—his wife and another woman—who were both injured. Fortunately, their injuries were minor.
Meanwhile, the Moi University bus was carrying several students. The crash left 15 of them injured. Out of these, three students suffered serious injuries.
As a result, they were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for specialized medical care.
The other 12 students had less serious wounds and were taken to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged.
Who Was Bishop Gilbert Deya?
Bishop Deya was not new to the spotlight. He became widely known in Kenya and even internationally in the early 2000s for his controversial claims of performing miracles—especially the so-called “miracle babies” incident.
The Miracle Babies Scandal
During this period, Deya made headlines for allegedly helping women who had trouble conceiving to miraculously give birth.
However, investigations later revealed disturbing details. Authorities accused him of child trafficking, claiming he was involved in stealing babies and passing them off as miraculous births.
This scandal led to his arrest in the United Kingdom, where he had moved. After a long legal process, he was extradited back to Kenya to face justice.
Continued Ministry Despite Scandal
Despite facing many court cases and a lot of public criticism, Bishop Deya never stopped preaching. He continued his religious work and TV ministry, remaining a controversial figure until his sudden death.
