In Dukana, North Horr Constituency, Marsabit County, police have arrested four family members following the tragic murder of newborn twins just two days after their birth in Dololo Boji village.
Using information provided by Dukana Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Nazarin Njuki, investigators have determined that the twins—a boy and a girl—likely died from suffocation on Monday night, only a day after their mother left the hospital.
The twins, born on Sunday in good health, were discharged alongside their mother on Monday.
ACC Njuki explained that concerns arose after locals tipped off the area chief about suspicious circumstances. Although the father initially claimed the twins were fine, further inquiries uncovered the devastating truth.
Njuki confirmed that the case is being investigated as a homicide. Police have identified the four family members as the primary suspects and are awaiting court orders to exhume the bodies.
A post-mortem examination on the twin babies will therefore, help determine the exact cause of there untimely death.
Traditional belief
During questioning, the mother denied any involvement in the deaths. However, ACC Njuki linked the incident to a traditional belief held by the Gabra community, which considers firstborn twins a bad omen for the family.
Currently, police are guarding the burial site as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) takes over the case.
Meanwhile, the mother has been readmitted to the hospital to receive counseling and psychological support.
Expressing deep concern, a visibly shaken ACC Njuki further condemned the harmful cultural belief, urging the community to abandon such practices.
“These retrogressive beliefs have no place in a modern society. We must prioritize human life above outdated traditions,” he stated.
Authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for the innocent lives lost.
