A video has been spreading online over the past few days, causing a stir that refuses to fade. The internet, like an elephant, never forgets.
This time, the spotlight is on Daadab MP Farah Maalim, a vocal supporter of President William Ruto. However, Maalim’s choice of words has left many people shocked.
In a public meeting attended by the President himself, Maalim used offensive language and hurled insults at Gen Z youth who criticize the government online.
His remarks were not only surprising but also disappointing. People can’t help but wonder—how would his grandchildren feel if they heard him speak like that? At 69, Maalim is likely a grandfather.
During his speech, Maalim said, “When you see everything progressing and some fools say, ‘Kasongo Ruto must go.’ To hell with those who say that! Is he sitting in your mother’s or father’s seat? He is sitting in our seat, and we will re-elect him, delivering 99% or even 100%. Ruto will stay until 2032!”
Along with these words, he added unprintable insults aimed at young Kenyans.
A habit
This is not the first time Maalim has made controversial statements. About six months ago, during Gen Z protests, the MP made headlines for the wrong reasons again.
Speaking in Somali, he suggested that if he were in charge, he would have dealt ruthlessly with the demonstrators, claiming he could “even have killed 5,000 of them each day.”
His remarks sparked outrage. Many people were horrified by his words and questioned how someone who once seemed diplomatic could speak so callously.
The backlash was swift. The Wiper Party, to which Maalim belongs, removed him from all parliamentary committees. He was also summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to record a statement.
On July 16, 2024, Maalim appeared before the NCIC. The commission stated that his remarks could incite hostility, hatred, or discrimination, which goes against the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
Surprisingly, Maalim denied the statements, despite the existence of a viral video. He claimed the video did not reflect his views or long-standing reputation.
Despite his denial, Maalim’s behavior has been compared to a bull in a china shop. His words, often harsh and undiplomatic, show a lack of respect and decorum.
Many believe he is on a warpath with Gen Z. Whether driven by ignorance, arrogance, or deep-seated resentment, his remarks do not befit a man of his age or position in society.
Poor role models
Meanwhile, President Ruto has urged parents to guide their children with wisdom and discipline. But how can parents teach these values when some grandparents, like Maalim, set such poor examples?
The President emphasized that parenting is a responsibility no government can take over. So, the question remains: Who will teach the parents and grandparents to behave?
