The impeached Deputy President further revealed that retired officers have volunteered to provide private security for him and guard his homes.
Speaking during an interview on Inooro TVs Kiririmbi show on Sunday, Gachagua said that since the consecration and installation of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u in Embu County on November 16, 2024, his official security detail has been reduced significantly.
According to Gachagua, the government only assigned him six officers after his impeachment. Four officers were placed at his home, and two were tasked with offering him private security.
However, he insisted that this arrangement has not been sufficient, especially in the face of rising threats to his safety.
Retired Officers Step In
Gachagua said that retired officers, including former Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) personnel, stepped up to protect him. They did this voluntarily after witnessing the recent attacks against him.
“Retired officers are now guarding my homes. Some were in KWS, others served in KFS,” he stated. “After the Limuru incident, about 300 people from different areas came looking for me. They volunteered to protect me. Above all, I trust God, who is the ultimate head of all security forces.”
Attack at Limuru Funeral
Gachagua recounted an alleged assassination attempt during a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, on November 28, 2024.
According to him, a group of armed goons attacked the attendees and disrupted the event. They even targeted his car by pelting it with stones.
He claimed that the attack was a well-planned effort to harm him. Fortunately, he managed to escape unharmed, though he still fears for his life.
“In Limuru, I had no security, but God protected me. The plan was to assassinate me,” he said. “Young men stormed in, removed tent poles, and looked for me specifically. I could hear them speaking in Kikuyu, saying gutha mutwe (hit the head).”
Gachagua added that the attackers surrounded his car, hitting it from all sides. Four young men came to his rescue, shielding him with their bodies.
“They lay on top of me to protect me. Because of them, no stone or pole hit me. Unfortunately, one of the young men was injured, and he is currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” Gachagua explained.
Living in Fear
The former deputy president said that he now lives in constant fear due to the threats he faces. He believes these attacks are politically motivated.
In his view, his recent public engagements and strong criticisms of President William Ruto’s government have made him a target.
“The attacks are political. It’s because I’ve been vocal since leaving office. My public remarks have unsettled many,” he said.
Despite the threats, Gachagua remains determined to continue his political journey. He announced that he will make a major political statement in 2025 to clarify his next move.
Growing Concerns Over Political Violence
Gachagua’s allegations have raised concerns over increasing political tension and violence in Kenya. His claims come at a time when other politicians have also reported intimidation and threats.
Many Kenyans worry that such incidents could escalate as political divisions deepen.
The former DP concluded by urging his supporters to remain calm, placing his safety in God’s hands. He assured them that despite the challenges, he is not backing down.
“I trust God to watch over me, and I will keep speaking the truth no matter what happens,” he said.
The Bigger Picture
These incidents highlight the growing fears of political violence and insecurity in Kenya. As leaders voice their concerns, citizens hope for peaceful political engagements and better protection for all public figures.
The coming year may prove crucial as political tensions continue to unfold.
