A somber atmosphere filled Elijah Matoke’s home after news broke of his tragic death. He had been splashed with acid inside his house on Wednesday, December 11.
Neighbors reported hearing Matoke cry for help after an argument with his wife.
“That morning, I was asleep in my house. Our doors are next to each other. I heard a cry for help, once, twice, three times, and I knew something was wrong,” said Lilian Magomere, a neighbor.
“I rushed out, opened the curtains, and saw him. His skin looked pink. I asked his children what had happened, and they said they didn’t know who poured acid on him.”
Matoke and his wife had lived together for three years. Neighbors revealed that their relationship had been troubled, with frequent disputes. On that fateful Wednesday, the conflicts escalated into tragedy.
“This hasn’t been a relationship based on love,” said Benard Angwenyi, Matoke’s brother. “I’ve mediated issues in their house several times. If Matoke didn’t have money, he wasn’t considered a man of the house.”
Clarice Matoke, Matoke’s daughter, recalled the moment she learned of the incident. “Around 6:40 a.m., while I was in Kericho, my uncle called and asked if I had spoken to my dad. He then told me to hurry over because things weren’t looking good.”
Matoke was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries four days later. Police have since arrested his wife and son, who are in custody as investigations continue.
“We have arrested the wife and the son. They are helping us with the investigation. Once we complete our work, we will charge them with murder,” stated Anderson Njagi, the Nakuru West OCPD.
