Kenya reports its first Mpox death as confirmed cases increase to 13.

Kenya confirmed its first mpox death on Monday, as the number of cases in the country continues to increase.

Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, announced in an update from Nairobi that the confirmed mpox cases in Kenya have reached 13.

She revealed the patient who lost their life to Mpox had a co-existing health condition that may have largely contributed to the death.

Likewise, She reported that eight patients have fully recovered and been discharged, while the remaining four are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

Muthoni stated that since the detection of mpox in Kenya, 238 samples have been tested, with 13 returning positive results and 225 testing negative.

Muthoni disclosed that,

“Nakuru has 2cases, Kajiado 2cases, Bungoma 2 cases,Taita Taveta 1 case, Busia 1 case, Nairobi 1 case, Mombasa 1 case , Makueni 1 case, Kericho 1 case, and Kilifi had 1 case”

She added that approximately 1.33 million travelers in and out of the country, have been screened at 26 points of entry so far.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) donated mpox diagnostic kits to Kenya’s Ministry of Health to support efforts in combating the disease.

WHO Representative in Kenya, Abdourahmane Diallo, noted that the kits would enhance Kenya’s ability to respond to the mpox outbreak.

The WHO declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, calling for a coordinated global response.
