Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed that Kenyans feel burdened under President William Ruto’s leadership due to high taxation and struggling public services, such as healthcare.
Speaking at a church service in Kiambu County on Sunday, the embattled deputy urged the congregation to pray for the President, who recently appointed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to the role of Deputy President.
“We urge Kenyans to stay peaceful and pray for President William Ruto as he faces the challenges impacting citizens. People are feeling overwhelmed by economic hardship, excessive taxation, and failing healthcare systems, and the President has a significant task ahead,” Gachagua said.
“We ask for prayers so that God may grant him wisdom and bring some relief to the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.
Betrayer and Ruthless
His statement on Sunday came after his harsh criticism of President Ruto the previous week, where he accused the President of betrayal, admitting he “never expected the Head of State to be that ruthless.”
Speaking after his discharge from the hospital, where he was admitted as Parliament voted to remove him from office, Gachagua expressed his shock that someone he had “helped become President and believed in” could turn against him.
During a church service at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, President Ruto reminded leaders that their primary duty in office is to serve the interests of the people.
Kithure Kindiki
Meanwhile, Kindiki has yet to assume office, as court orders have blocked his swearing-in until cases challenging the impeachment are heard and resolved. The High Court recently declined a request for a three-judge panel to withdraw from hearing these cases.
On Friday, the judges stated that their decision rested on four key principles: the constitutional concept of recusal, impartiality as a reason for recusal, whether the applications demonstrated sufficient grounds for bias, and the merit of the applications.
