Livestock farmers and residents of Taragwiti, Kohego, Nyametaburo, and Keng’ori in Migori County report living in fear due to an invasion of hyenas that have been roaming their area.
Residents have been experiencing sleepless nights, worried that the hyenas might break into their homes and attack them.
Farmers, led by Merengo Weria, expressed their helplessness, stating they have run out of strategies to scare off the hyenas.
“These animals have been invading our farms and destroying our crops. My maize farm has been devastated,” he said.
The locals are calling on authorities to intervene and address the issue to prevent further destruction.
“I’m afraid to even step outside for fear of encountering a hyena and being attacked,” said Mwita Mabeya, another resident.
Area Assistant Chief Moses Mabucha reported that the hyenas invaded homes on two consecutive days, killing sheep and three goats while it was raining, and the owners were too frightened to respond.
He noted that children, including students, are living in fear of potential attacks. “Last time, we found remains of dead animals in a sugarcane plantation,” the administrator added.
Local chairman Joseph Ibambale urged residents not to harm the animals but to report the situation instead.
“Previously, there was a mob hunt for a hyena that had killed two goats, and people managed to kill it,” he mentioned.
Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) are yet to comment on the situation.
