The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced on Wednesday that it received 314,117 applications for 46,000 advertised teaching positions between October 1 and 8.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, while addressing the Parliamentary Education Committee, reported that out of these applications, 93,646 were for the 6,000 primary teacher positions, and 144,177 were for the 39,550 junior secondary school (JSS) teacher posts.

Additionally, the commission received 76,294 applications for the 450 secondary school teaching vacancies, Macharia informed the MPs.

The advertisement is part of the TSC’s plan to confirm 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable positions starting in January 2025, for which the commission secured Ksh.13.4 billion from the Treasury.

“At present, the commission is in the process of receiving employment forms and offer letters from its county offices. The teachers are expected to report to schools by January 2025,” said TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.

Regarding teacher promotions, Macharia added that Ksh.1 billion has been allocated for promoting teachers in the 2024/2025 financial year.
