National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has denied reports suggesting that he is eyeing the position of Interior Cabinet Secretary in the event that Kithure Kindiki assumes the role of Deputy President.
Speaking in Rabai, Kilifi County, Ichung’wah emphasized that he has no interest in any Cabinet Secretary position and is focused on serving the residents of Kikuyu and fulfilling his duties as Majority Leader in the National Assembly.
No personal grudges
He also clarified that his involvement in the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was motivated by service to the nation, rejecting claims of a personal grudge against Gachagua.
“There is a leader who suggested that I should take up the Interior CS position. Let me inform him that I already have responsibilities, and I don’t want to create confusion. I led the impeachment motion in the National Assembly, not out of dislike for anyone, but because we prioritized development,” Ichung’wah said.
“I didn’t do it to secure another position. I’m not interested in being a Cabinet Secretary. My focus is on serving the people of Kikuyu and fulfilling my role in the National Assembly,” he added.
Ichung’wah was among those rumored to potentially benefit from Gachagua’s impeachment by securing either the Deputy President or Interior CS position.
As close ally of President William Ruto, the lawmaker has been outspoken in recent months, accusing Gachagua of undermining the nation.
Following the Senate’s decision to uphold Gachagua’s impeachment, President Ruto submitted CS Kindiki’s name to the National Assembly during a special session held on Friday.
MPs unanimously approved Kindiki as the Deputy President nominee, paving the way for the Interior CS to assume the country’s second highest office.
