More and more Kenyans are choosing to give birth in other countries. According to new data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the number of Kenyans delivering babies abroad has gone up steadily over the past three years.

Big Jump in Foreign Births
In the latest Kenya Vital Statistics Report for 2024, KNBS reported that 5,694 Kenyan births were registered outside the country in 2024.
This marks a clear increase from 4,954 births in 2023. The numbers have continued to grow each year, showing a rising trend.
When we look at the specific countries where Kenyans are mostly giving birth, the United States leads the list.
In 2024, 1,649 Kenyan babies were born in the U.S., a jump from 1,395 in 2023 and 1,142 in 2022. This shows a steady rise year after year.
Next is the United Kingdom, where 1,076 Kenyan mothers gave birth in 2024. This number also grew from 934 in 2023 and 726 in 2022. Meanwhile, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the numbers rose from 222 births in 2022 to 311 in 2023, and then to 361 in 2024.
Other countries also recorded growing numbers of Kenyan births. For instance, Australia had 117 Kenyan births in 2022, which increased to 177 in 2023, and then to 235 in 2024. Similarly, Canada saw 153 births in 2022, 163 in 2023, and 225 in 2024.
African Countries Also See Kenyan Births
Apart from the popular destinations in the West and the Middle East, Kenyans are also giving birth in nearby African countries.
Over the last three years, births have been registered in Uganda, South Africa, and Tanzania. This shows that even within the continent, many Kenyans are traveling to have their children.
KNBS also highlighted that women aged 30 to 34 years had the highest number of foreign birth registrations. In fact, 35.4 percent of the total births abroad in 2024 came from mothers in this age group.
