President William Ruto has nominated Prof. Kithure Kindiki to succeed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by Parliament.
Speaker Moses Wetangula announced this on Friday morning in a communication to the National Assembly.
“In accordance with Standing Order 42(1), I would like to inform the House that I received a message from the President this morning regarding the nomination of Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya following the impeachment of the former office holder,” Wetangula stated.
Prof. Kindiki, who is currently the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, will need approval from the National Assembly before he can take on the role of Deputy President
The National Assembly is required to vote on the nomination within 60 days of receiving his name. Once approved, the nominee will be officially appointed by the President as his deputy.
While the Constitution does not outline a specific timeframe for this appointment, it is anticipated to happen promptly after Parliament’s approval.
Kindiki’s appointment follows after the impeachment of former Deputy President Gachagua who was impeached when the senators upholded his impeachment.
