Outrage in Nyandarua County
Residents of Kipipiri in Nyandarua County are calling for justice after a man died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 23, 2025, at Turasha Police Station, sparking public concern and demands for answers.
Who Was the Victim?
The man who died has been identified as Simon Ndubi, aged 44. According to police, Simon had been arrested earlier that day for allegedly obstructing police officers as they carried out their duties. Officers claimed that he appeared drunk at the time of his arrest.

What Police Say Happened
According to the police report, the tragedy unfolded around 12:46 pm. The officer on duty went to check the cells and reportedly found Simon had died by suicide.
The report says he had used his own shirt, which he tied to the padlock of the inner cell door, to hang himself.

Family Raises Doubts
However, Simon’s family members are not convinced by the police version of events. They strongly doubt the claim of suicide.
According to them, when Simon was discovered, his knees were still touching the floor, which they say is not a normal position for someone who has died by hanging.
Leaders Call for Investigation
As the news spread, local leaders joined the residents in demanding a full and independent investigation. Isaac Mbae, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Githioro Ward, voiced his concern.
“A middle-aged man was arrested by police in Turasha and later died in custody. We urge IPOA and the DCI to investigate because the explanation of how he allegedly hanged himself doesn’t add up—he was found on his knees,” said Mbae.
Growing Pressure on Authorities
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to uncover the truth behind Simon Ndubi’s death.
Residents are demanding transparency and accountability, stating that too many deaths occur in police custody without clear explanations.
A Pattern of Concern?
This case comes amid rising public distrust in police conduct. As more Kenyans speak up about alleged abuses of power and unexplained deaths, the need for independent investigations and justice for victims has become increasingly urgent.
