DPP orders IPOA to Investigate Ojwang’s death and report in 7 days

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has asked the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to urgently investigate the death of Albert Ojwang.

He has given IPOA seven days to complete the investigation and submit a report for review and further action.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said it is closely monitoring the situation.

The office emphasized that it is fully committed to uncovering the truth behind Alberts Ojwang’s untimely death.

The ODPP is keenly following the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang,” the statement read.

DPP Ingonga also made it clear that his directive is backed by the Constitution and laws of Kenya. He cited Article 157(4) of the Constitution and Section 5(2) of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act.

In light of the above, and under the relevant constitutional and legal provisions, the DPP has directed IPOA to fast-track its investigations. The investigation file must be submitted to the ODPP within seven days for review and appropriate legal action,” Ingonga stated.

What Happened to Albert Ojwang?

Albert Ojwang died on Sunday, June 8, 2025, while in the police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

He had been arrested over allegations of spreading false information on social media about Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.

His death has triggered widespread public outrage and demands for justice, especially from civil society groups, political leaders, and religious organizations.

Immediate Action by Police IG

In response to the growing pressure from the public, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja took swift action.

He announced the suspension of senior police officers stationed at Central Police Station, where Ojwang died.

The police chief explained that the suspensions aim to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation by IPOA. He made this announcement in a statement issued on June 8, 2025.

Following Ojwang’s death, several leaders and organizations have spoken out. For example:
