Two university students tragically drowned while enjoying a fun day out at a well-known “park and chill” spot near Thika Road in the Mugutha area of Juja sub-county.
The location, famous for its beautiful dam and popular among outdoor lovers, is also extremely dangerous.
Many motorists are said to park on a steep slope that overlooks the water, increasing the risk of accidents.

According to a police report, the victims were two young male students, aged 21 and 22. They had gone to the dam for a swim, but unfortunately, their fun outing turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.
On Sunday, divers from Kiambu County recovered their bodies from the water. The remains were then transported to the General Kago Funeral Home, as authorities launched an investigation to determine what led to their deaths.
Previous incidents
This recreational site has been the scene of similar tragedies before. In January 2023, the area first caught public attention when a man and a woman lost their lives after their car rolled into the dam.
Locals who witnessed that incident recalled the horrifying moments. Around 7:30 p.m., bystanders heard terrified cries for help coming from the water.
One resident, Lucy Muthoni, described the scene: “I heard a woman screaming. She was struggling to swim and save herself, but no divers were nearby. After the car sank, she managed to escape through the windows.”
The dam’s surroundings tell another story—one of frequent partying. Empty alcohol bottles scattered along the banks suggest that the spot attracts many revelers looking to have a good time.
After the 2023 drowning, officials tried to make the area safer. They fenced it off and set up a restaurant and bar inside.
Visitors were then required to pay Ksh.100 to enter, and Wi-Fi was made available for those spending time there.
Despite these changes, the latest incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of this popular relaxation spot.
