Former IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati passes away at 63

The former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, has sadly passed away.

His demise occurred at a hospital in Nairobi, where he had been receiving treatment following a prolonged illness. At the time of his passing, he was 63 years old.

Chebukati, who was a distinguished lawyer by profession, was officially appointed as the Chairperson of the IEBC by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2017.

His tenure, which spanned six years, eventually came to an end on January 17, 2023. Throughout his time in office, he played a pivotal role in overseeing Kenya’s electoral processes, taking over the position from his predecessor, Ahmed Issack Hassan.

Cause of death

Meanwhile, Chebukati’s family has stated that they are yet to determine the exact cause of his death. His passing has undoubtedly left a significant void in the country’s leadership and electoral governance.

In response to this tragic news, President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to Chebukati’s family, friends, and colleagues.

While mourning the former IEBC Chairperson, Ruto praised him as a leader of great integrity, emphasizing that he remained principled and diligent throughout his career in public service.

“I have received the heartbreaking news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with immense sadness. He was a dedicated and principled leader who carried out his duties with unwavering integrity, always prioritizing the best interests of our nation,” President Ruto stated.

Chebukati’s passing marks the end of an era for Kenya’s electoral body, as he was at the helm of critical elections that shaped the country’s political landscape.

His leadership, contributions, and unwavering commitment to upholding democracy will be remembered for years to come.
