88 Students Affected by Fire at JKUAT: Investigations Ongoing

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has confirmed that 88 students were affected by a fire incident at its main campus in Juja.

The fire broke out on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at around 4:00 a.m. and impacted the second floor of Hall 5, one of the students’ hostels.

In an official statement, the university expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incident.

“The University Management deeply regrets the fire incident that affected about eighty-eight students residing on the second floor of the hostel,” the statement read.

JKUAT also confirmed that the students lost personal belongings and other valuables during the incident.

A few students sustained minor injuries, according to the university. Most were treated and discharged, while three remain under observation at the university hospital.

JKUAT described the incident as both regrettable and unfortunate.

Alternative accommodation

To support the affected students, the university has arranged for alternative accommodation and counseling services.

Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

“The cause of the fire has not been established. However, investigative agencies, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Juja, have taken up the matter,” the statement added.

Reassuring the university community, JKUAT emphasized that the safety and security of its students remain a top priority.

Patrick Amunavi, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, announced that security surveillance measures have been enhanced across the institution to ensure the safety of students and staff.

He also assured stakeholders that academic programs and other university activities would proceed as scheduled.

In appreciation, the university commended the swift response from various groups, including JKUAT student fire marshals, firefighters from Kiambu County, staff, and members of the Juja community.

“We sincerely thank the first responders for their quick action in mitigating the effects of the fire,” said Amunavi.

JKUAT reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its students and urged all stakeholders to remain calm as investigations continue.
